Netley Abbey

 

 


An attractive small village edging Southampton Water adn the expanse of Royal Victoria Country Park, Netley lies in the parish of Hound, the name of which derives from a plant called 'Hoarhound' which once grew profusely in the area.

 

Within Netley lies the imposing ruins of Netley Abbey set in beautiful lawns (with free admission), Netley Castle which was built in 1542 as oe of Henry VIII's coastal defenes against the French; built by Sir William Paulet, the castle is now luxury apartments. There is a fascinatibe heritage exhibition in the Heritage Centre within Royal Victoria Country Park, where the UK's first purpose built military hospital once stood.
