Rodney Bewes in Jerome K Jerome On the Stage - and off

The brief career of a would-be actor circa 1880

Best remembered as Bob in the BBC classic The Likely Lads, Rodney Bewes returns to The Point in a new one-man show based on the theatre writings of Jerome K Jerome and telling of his trials and tribulations as a Victorian actor. Bewes plays Jerome as well as the characters he encounters: theatre managers, landladies, stage door keepers, agents and, of course, actors – from stars to extras, playing parts from high tragedy to low comedy.  Slowly he comes to see the glamorous world of showbiz for what it is.

This very funny and entertaining evening showcases Bewes’ talents as a skilled character actor as he brings to life the colourful and eccentric characters of the Victorian stage with hilarious effect.

Wednesday 9 April - Humprhey Lyttelton at The Concorde Club

Much loved throughout the world, Lyttelton is a self-taught trumpet player. He has led an astoundingly successful career and has established himself as one of the father figures of British Jazz.
Today, Humphrey is busier than ever. His band, one of the most versatile in the world, still tours regularly. He is Chairman of the hugely popular panel game I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue on Radio 4, which he has presented for 30 years.
He also presents The Best Of Jazz on BBC Radio 2, purveying the best of jazz on record in radio's most popular and authoritative jazz show.

As a journalist, his articles appeared regularly in Punch, The Field and the British Airways Highlife magazines. He has written seven books and over 120 original compositions for his band.
In leisure moments, he enjoys birdwatching and practises calligraphy (he is President Of The Society For Italic Handwriting). In 1984, finding time hanging heavy, he founded his own record label and called it Calligraph.
Humphrey is now much in demand as an after-dinner speaker, on his own and in combined presentations involving his band.
Humphrey was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at both the Post Office British Jazz Awards in April 2000 and at the first BBC Jazz Awards in 2001. He was also the recipient of the radio industry's highest honour in 1993 - the Sony Gold Award.

Claytime

A play with clay and a little audience participation

You are invited to a place where the earth’s natural material meets with children’s imaginations: a world of fabulous forms, amazing animals and morphing monsters. After clowning around with some clay our two artists ask the young audience for ideas for characters, settings and stories which are then created and used in an improvised play, a play that is unique to that audience.  As it ends the children have their own opportunity for some hands-on clay time.  The whole experience is underscored by a live musician while the environment and characters created are captured on camera and the pictures left at The Point to be displayed.

Wednesday 30th April - Top Tenor Saxes Scott Hamilton & Tommy Whittle with John Pearce Trio at The Concorde Club

Tommy Whittle
In the world of saxophone playing, Tommy has been renowned and respected throughout his career. He joined the great Ted Heath Band when he was only 20 years old. After five and a half years, he left to further his solo playing desires and, in fact, became a featured soloist with the BBC Showband. He won popularity polls then, and again as recently as 1990 and 1991 when he won the British Jazz Award for Top Tenor Saxophone. He has been in constant demand on TV and in recording studios. For two and half years he was the Musical Director of the Dorchester Hotel in London after which he became a member of the famous Jack Parnell ATV Orchestra which accompanied shows such as Bing Crosby, Barbra Streisand, Peggy Lee, Tom Jones and Mike Yarwood. In 2005 Tommy was awarded a silver medal for his distinguished career in jazz by the Worshipful Company of Musicians in London
'Tommy Whittle is a national treasure.' Humphrey Lyttelton
Scott Hamilton is the premier 'mainstream' saxophonist of today. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1954, he came along at the time when the kind of jazz he loved - the small group swing of such great stylists as Illinois Jacquet and Eddie Lockjaw Davis - was out of fashion, and largely out of the public ear. Scott's handsome sound and impeccable phrasing were a rare commodity among young jazzmen. He has recorded over 60 albums as both leader and sideman. They feature Scott playing in all kinds of settings & in partnership with such distinguished players as Ruby Braff and Dave McKenna. The constant is Scott's creative imagination and the beautiful, honeyed sound he gets out of the tenor saxophone.
While he acknowledges the sidelong influence of players such as John Coltrane, he continues to perform the music he loves, which first brought him into jazz - great ballads and blues, played from the heart, with the timeless virtues of swinging playing underscoring every phrase. A worldwide following of admirers wouldn't have it any other way.
Long regarded a consummate interpreter of standards, Scott Hamilton's big, warm tenor saxophone tone and unerring sense of swing have a way of making every tune he plays uniquely his own.  His swing style is virtually unchanged since his early days. If you’re one of those jazz aficionados who like to imagine playing tenor sax, then you’re dreaming that you sound like Scott!
