Bursledon

View over the Jolly Sailor

Steeped in heritage, Bursledon was for centuries the centre for shipbuilding, with the 'Elephant', Nelson's flagship for the battle of Copenhagen being built here. You can still see the Elephant Boatyard, although today the 74 gun naval ships have been replaced by racing yachts.

The Swanwick, Bursledon and Warsash Regatta takes place on the 26th and 27th August. The regatta is in it's 136th year and for 2006 will follow the theme of Ancient Rome, look out for the horses and chariots on the river!

The famous Jolly Sailor pub has great river views and its own jetty for drinkers arriving by boat! . At around 360 years old, it is the perfect spot for viewing the activities taking place on the river.

Another popular and historic character pub worth seeking, famed for it's food and atmosphere is the Fox and Hounds Lone Barn, tucked away from view at Hungerford bottom. Thirsty iron workers and ship builders in the 18th century took ale here when Bursledon was a busy port and shipbuilding centre.
