Bishops Waltham

St. Peters Street
An attractive medieval town, where a palace was founded in the 12th century by Bishop Henry of Blois, the brother of King Stephen. An important residence for powerful Bishops, the palace hosted many royal visits including Henry V who was preparing for the Battle of Agincourt and Mary Tudor who waited for King Phillip to arrive from Spain for their wedding. The Palace orders and the ruins from which make a worthwhile visit today.

The town also boasts a Norman church, many 17th and 18th century buildings which host a range of traditional and specialist shops and Waltham Chase Mill whose restoration recently featured on BBC TV.

The course of the River Hamble lies near the medieval ruins of Bishops Waltham Palace.
